My design process starts with careful planning. I identify the visual aspects that need evaluation and improvement within the user interface. This includes factors such as color schemes, typography, layout, and graphical elements.
User-Centered Design
My focus is usually on both UI and UX with a core emphasis on enhancing the overall user experience. I strive to create UI that is not only visually appealing but also user-friendly and accessible. This journey begins with in-depth user research to understand their needs and preferences, ensuring that every design decision enhances the overall user experience.
Prototyping
To bring the UI improvements to life, I create detailed UI prototypes. These serve as interactive visual representations of the changes, enabling user testing and feedback. We gather valuable insights from user testing sessions which guide us in refining the design based on real user experiences.
Data Analysis
Besides user testing, data analysis is crucial. We employ tools to monitor user interactions and engagement with our UI. This data-driven approach informs our design decisions by identifying areas that need improvement and those that are well-received.
Iterative Design
Like any design process, UI design is iterative. We continuously refine the visual elements based on user feedback, test results, and data analysis. This iterative approach helps us adapt and grow.
My bookshelf user test:
In one of the projects I had the opportunity to work on, we conducted a user test involving 380 participants from our Swedish panel. Our goal was to understand how users interacted with our platform, specifically their bookshelf.
Each user was given a straightforward task: select two books from their collection that they had spent the most time with. Once they made their choices, they were asked to rate these books and answer a series of additional questions.
The results of this user test provided some fascinating insights. We discovered that there was intense competition among four different versions of the content we offered. However, one version, "Large Bookshelf v3," stood out as the clear winner, achieving a remarkable success rate of 55%. Even the lowest-performing version managed a respectable 48% success rate.
We also noticed a particular user behavior pattern. Those who took the time to carefully scroll through all the books on their virtual bookshelf, evaluating their options before making a selection, tended to perform exceptionally well in the test. This behavior often led them to discover hidden gems waiting at the bottom of the shelf.
These findings not only shed light on user preferences and behavior but also offered us valuable insights for optimizing our platform, content, and user experience. It was an exciting project that allowed us to fine-tune our offerings based on user feedback and behavior.
With the valuable data collected from this user test, our team was able to make informed decisions and take specific actions to enhance the user experience and improve our platform.
Here are some of the actions and applications of the data:
Optimisation
We used the insights to optimise the performance of the different versions of our content. The version that performed best, "Large Bookshelf v3," was given more prominent placement and further improvements.
User Interface Enhancement
The data revealed that users who took their time to scroll through their virtual bookshelves tended to perform better. This led to the enhancement of the user interface, making it more intuitive and encouraging users to explore their bookshelves more thoroughly.
Feature Development
We considered introducing features that encourage users to rate books and answer additional questions. This not only enhanced engagement but also provided us with more data for future improvements.
One opportunity for improvement was the placement of the progress bar. In response to user feedback, we relocated the progress bar under the book cover to enhance the overall user experience. This adjustment improved the visual hierarchy and made it more convenient and intuitive for users to track their progress within the audiobook.
